I had planned to run this on my blog this past weekend to coincide with Palm Sunday. However, the impending winter weather forced me to make a slight adjustement…not that it really matters. What does is that this particular tornado outbreak is considered the 2nd worst in U.S. history behind the Super Outbreak of 1974. While the majority of the tornadoes struck just east of our region, the first of 39 tornadoes that would kill 260 people dipped down near Tipton, Iowa and killed a man near Lowden. The EF-4 twister was one of many that terrorized residents from Iowa to Michigan.

There are many accounts of the outbreak that I have come across but here are a few samples of some of the particulars regarding this incredible event. They are courtesy of the NWS and I hope you enjoy this nostalgic trip back to one of the most violent and deadly days in this country’s weather history.
Ride the wind,
Terry
