Late Father's day local storm chasers Jeremy Ludin and Joel Wright headed northwest of Iowa City to capture supercell thunderstorms that produced confirmed tornadoes. The two encountered rapidly rotating mesocyclones with classic structure. Wish I could have been there for the action.
Jeremy did give this account of his chase in an email, "I wasn't able to hit the road till around 7, but amazingly I caught up with a decent looking tornado warned cell just northwest of Iowa city. I have never had higher confidence in a cell dropping a tornado, but unfortunately, "close" will have to do again. RFD wrapped hard forcing me to switch position, but unfortunately by the time I escaped it, it had already merged with a cell from the south. It was also getting dark so I called it quits".
"My chase buddy Joel Wright, on the other hand, had a spectacular day, nabbing at least one tornado (although wrapped in rain). I have attached a few of his pics at the bottom of this page. At least one of us cashed in this year!".
If that's not enough, another long-time weatherbuddy and excellent storm chaser Kevin Walters chipped in with his momentos of the day. Kevin knocked off 3 tornadoes and felt pretty darn good about his chase whcih began earlier and further northwest. Be sure and catch his images below as well.
The next 4 images courtesy of Joel Wright.

Thanks Jeremy and Joel, excellent work as always.
Now, here are several images Kevin Walters sent of his day chasing.

Thanks to Kevin and to all of you who are helping to make this one of the best weather sites in the Midwest. Keep it coming....

“The book is amazingly well researched and is historically significant. Every public and school library in Iowa should have a copy.” - Des Moines Register, Dec 10, 2008
