SEVERE WEATHER BLOG JUNE 18th, 2009

*THURSDAY JUNE 18TH 6:19PM 2009*
A very unstable air mass resides over the region tonight as hot humid air over-runs a boundary running n/west to s/east through the Quad Cities.  South of this warm front dewpoints are in the upper 70s and temperatures have hit the low 90s.  The heat index in far southeast Iowa is near 110.  Around Dubuque the temperature remains in the upper 70s.  What's known as a cap is currently holding convection at bay but when it breaks storms should rapidly spring to life.  Severe weather will likely follow.  I am watching the trends closely but so far nothing has popped.  I do expect the most widespread thunderstorm activity to be along and north of the warm front.  A watch (probably tornado) will likely be issued for parts of the area this evening
